As we age, the ability of skin cells to produce the building blocks of the skin decreases. The fiber network of collagen and elastic fibers becomes weaker and more disorganized. The distribution of water-binding structures changes and the skin's water content decreases, which becomes visible as the skin loses some of its volume. At the same time, the fat layer in the skin becomes thinner.
Age-related changes in the skin are manifested, among other things, by the skin becoming more lax, wrinkled, less elastic and lacking in moisture. The first wrinkles begin to develop from the late 20s. These are typically mimic wrinkles, which occur when you use your facial muscles, for example when you speak, smile or squint.
From the age of 40, the changes of age become more obvious. After menopause, the skin changes as a result of altered hormonal influences. The skin becomes thinner and less elastic, and wrinkles become more prominent.
Men often develop wrinkles a little later than women, but the wrinkles are often deeper. This is because men have thicker skin and a higher sebum production than women.
Heredity and age are the main reasons why we get wrinkles, while smoking, UV rays and air pollution are the main factors that contribute to wrinkles developing too early – what is called premature aging.
In premature aging, free radicals exert harmful oxidation on healthy cells and other structures in the skin. These oxidative processes are called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in skin aging. The skin's antioxidative properties are important defense mechanisms that reduce the consequences of oxidative stress.
The external causes of oxidative stress are often stronger than the skin's antioxidant defenses can handle, leading to premature aging. This means that signs of aging and impaired skin function occur faster than the body's own natural processes dictate.
Age-related changes in the skin are manifested by the skin becoming more lax, wrinkled, less elastic and lacking in moisture. Skincare products for mature skin must provide nourishment, moisture and fatty acids, as well as repair previous damage and protect against harmful influences.
